Couples intimacy

Couples intimacy exercises: inside Deepen the Connection: The Series

Most advice about intimacy lives in your head: talk more, try harder, make time. Our first event takes a different route. For one evening, you and your partner will move, laugh, talk and eat together, among other couples who want the same thing.

Why couples intimacy exercises work

Intimacy is not one thing. It is emotional (feeling understood), physical (comfort in each other's presence and touch), and playful (being able to laugh together). When life gets busy, couples tend to keep the logistics and lose the rest.

Shared, slightly new activities are a simple way to bring it back. Research on couples, including the “self-expansion” work of psychologist Arthur Aron and colleagues, links doing novel, engaging things together with greater relationship satisfaction. You do not need a grand gesture. You need a structure that gets you out of routine and into each other's attention. That is what this evening is built to be.

What happens at Deepen the Connection

We lead the whole evening, so you do not have to plan or perform anything. It moves through five parts, from personal to shared to social.

1. Individual stretching

We begin on our own. A guided stretch lets everyone arrive, slow their breathing and leave the day behind. It is hard to connect with a partner while your mind is still stuck in traffic on the highway, so this part is about getting present before getting close.

2. Couple stretching

Next, you stretch together. Partner stretches mean supporting each other, matching breath and telling each other “more” or “less.” Without making a big deal of it, they practise trust, gentle touch and clear, kind communication. Everyone works at their own comfort level, and nothing is forced.

3. Couples exercises and light cardio

Then we pick up the pace with playful, coordinated movement and light cardio. Doing something a little silly together, on the same team, is one of the quickest ways to reset the mood between two people. Expect to laugh and expect to break a small sweat.

4. A communication exercise

With bodies warm and guards lowered, we move into a guided communication exercise just for the two of you. The focus is on really saying the thing and really hearing it. You decide what to share, and no one is asked to speak to the room.

5. Food and mingling

We finish with food and time to meet the other couples. This is the community part of FICCS. Many people find that talking with other couples who are on the same page is both reassuring and fun, and it is how an evening turns into a circle of friends.

Four couples intimacy exercises to try at home

You do not have to wait for the event. These take a few minutes each. Move gently, stop if anything hurts, and skip anything that does not suit your body. This is general wellbeing advice, not medical advice.

  1. Back-to-back breathing (2 minutes). Sit on the floor with your backs touching. Close your eyes and breathe slowly. Notice your partner's breathing against your back and let the two rhythms settle together.
  2. Partner stretch with a signal word (5 minutes). Take turns easing into a simple stretch while the other person supports you. Agree on a word like “easy” or “more” so you can adjust without a debate.
  3. The phone-free walk or dance (10 minutes). Walk around the block or put on one song and move together. No phones, no agenda, just keeping step.
  4. Three questions (10 minutes). Each of you answers in turn while the other listens for two uninterrupted minutes, without fixing or defending: One thing I appreciated about you this week. Something I have been wanting more of. One thing I would like us to try.

Who this evening is for

Deepen the Connection is for couples who want to go deeper and grow closer, whether you have been together a few months or many years. You set your own pace, and the groups are small and hosted. Wear activewear and bring your partner. Safety is one of our five values: no judgement, clear boundaries, always private.
